Help shape our future waste management and achieve our goal for a waste-free Tairāwhiti.
Every day we're all creating waste - from food scraps to packaging. We're throwing more and more away.
Do you know where it ends up?
- Landfills are filling up faster than we can keep up. This comes at a huge cost not only for councils and ratepayers but also for our environment.
- Illegal dumping is increasing - often it's recyclable material that could be disposed of at no cost at recycling centres.
Facts - what's in our kerbside rubbish?

Our plan for waste minimisation and management
We need a new Waste Minimisation and Management Plan for our community. This is our chance to include opportunities for better waste solutions. The plan has a 6-year timeframe and needs to set out how we can:
- reduce waste going to landfill and focus on reducing and reusing.
- manage our waste to prevent pollution of the land, air and water.
- support community-led initiatives to reduce waste and increase opportunities for innovation.
You can help us set the direction for the plan. We'd love to hear your suggestions for what's working well, what could be improved, ideas for reducing waste and anything else that you feel would help our community reduce waste.
