Future Whenua Summit 2026
This four-day summit brings people together to talk about how we care for our land now and into the future.
Farmers, foresters, Māori landowners, growers, researchers and community members will come together to share real experiences and practical ideas for making land use in Tairāwhiti more resilient, productive and sustainable.
Tairāwhiti is already seeing the impacts of past land use decisions and increasing climate risks. This summit is about learning what works, supporting each other and exploring new ways to use land that protect our communities, infrastructure and environment while supporting local livelihoods.
Council is supporting this event and will be at the summit on Saturday 14 March to share and talk about the land use work underway in our region.
Key themes in the summit
- Using a mix of land uses to reduce risk and build resilience
- How nature and biodiversity can help protect land, waterways and farms
- Māori land stewardship and kaitiakitanga
- The future of forestry and more regenerative systems
- Building strong and connected rural communities
