Tairāwhiti Future Development Strategy 2024 - 2054

We're producing a Future Development Strategy (FDS) that will set out where is best to accommodate housing growth in Tairāwhiti.

The FDS guides where housing and business growth can happen over the next 30 years. It identifies areas that can support growth if infrastructure is upgraded or expanded, and set out what infrastructure is needed to support growth in the short, medium and long term.

What you've told us so far

In November 2022, we asked you for your feedback on 4 options – intensification, dispersed growth, eastern growth or western growth. The feedback was that our region favours intensification, aiming for a vibrant city growing upwards not outwards, meeting the challenges of climate change.

Greater housing density has been identified by both central government and our own community as necessary for a well-functioning city.

Uncontrolled urban sprawl over the productive soils of the Poverty Bay Flats fragments and reduces the land available for food production.

Tell us what you think

Planning for our future and ensuring that we provide enough housing to meet demand is important for the community’s wellbeing. Before the FDS is adopted, we want to hear from you.

This is your opportunity to help shape the place you call home as it grows over the next 30 years.

Read the draft Future Development Strategy and the Statement of Proposal and tell us if you agree with the proposals and options.

Feedback closed on 31 January 2024.
